Mervyn Peters is a distinguished figure in the Malaysian performing art scene, celebrated for his wide-ranging contributions as a musical director, stage manager, and lighting designer. With a career that spans several decades, Peters has played a vital role behind the scenes of many iconic theatre and musical productions in Malaysia.
Peters began his journey in the performing arts with the Philharmonic Society of Selangor, where he quickly became a key figure in the production of major musicals. In 1984, he served as musical director and producer for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, showcasing his early talent in bringing large-scale performances to life. He continued to shape the Society’s productions, notably contributing a lighting designer and production manager for The Mikado in 1989 at Kuala Lumpur’s DBKL Auditorium.
Renowned for his technical precision and musical sensibility, Peters has also worked internationally. In 1977, he was credited om chorus master for Verdi’s opera Aida with Bristol Opera in the United Kingdom, marking his presence on the global stage.
In more recent years, Peters was recognized for his work in Ismail, The Last Days, a production by the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts (KLPAC). His musical direction in the show contributed to its win at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, further cementing his legacy as a masterful and dedicated theatre practitioner.
